I had been pressing the Sync button every couple of hours to try and force the download with no luck then around 2200 (EST) it downloaded and installed the update. In the case of Windows, the Kobo desktop client offers you access to the Kobo ebook store, plus a friendly organizer to manage the books in your library.
Follow the update prompt on the LCD screen.
Copy the '.bin' file to the SD card root directory, then insert the SD card into the device.
